Holy Family Hospital is a provincial referral centre providing rehabilitation and residential care to adults in their middle years and beyond. Located in South Vancouver, it is recognized as a leader in rehab and elder care services, with 76 inpatient rehab beds, a range of outpatient rehab services and 142 residential care beds. The facility is life-changing for those learning to live with stroke, arthritis, joint replacement and lower limb amputations.

Special features include a hydrotherapy pool and Easy Street, a simulated community that allows patients to practice essential life skills in a safe, challenging and realistic environment.

Physiotherapy staff are departmentally based and work within a program based care delivery model.

Patient population description:

In the rehab setting of Holy Family Hospital we provide rehab care to the geriatric patient living with neurological conditions (primarily strokes but also includes Parkinsons, M.S. etc.), arthritis, joint replacements, lymphodema, lower limb amputations and a variety of complex musculoskeletal conditions. The care is provided in an interdisciplinary basis in either an inpatient or an outpatient setting.

In the residential setting we provide care to complex geriatric patients who require 24-hour care in an interdisciplinary setting.

Physiotherapist expertise on site (special interests, degrees, certificates, etc.):

Physiotherapists at Holy Family Hospital have extensive training in neurological and musculoskeletal therapeutic interventions. Many of the staff are Bobath trained. A number of staff have training in LSVT BIG which is targeted at the patient with Parkinsons Disease.

The physiotherapy staff and students are supported clinically by the Site Physiotherapy Leader, two Clinical Experts in the areas of Neurological Rehab and Musculoskeletal Rehab as well as by the PHC Physiotherapy Research, Education and Practice Coordinator.

The physiotherapy staff and students are supported clinically by the Site Physiotherapy Leader, two Clinical Experts in the areas of Neurological Rehab and Musculoskeletal Rehab as well as by the PHC Physiotherapy Research, Education and Practice Coordinator.

Learning to become part of an interdisciplinary care team is a key component of the learning at Holy Family Hospital.

Therapeutic interventions are provided on both an individual and a group basis. Education on an individual and a group basis is also a part of the care plan provided.

Opportunities for viewing surgeries, diagnostic procedures or spending time with other disciplines are also available to students.

The care provided in both the Residential Unit and the Rehab Unit is provided on an interdisciplinary manner. The rehab team is comprised of: Family Practice Physicians, Nurses, Nutrition Services, Occupational Therapy, Pastoral Care, Psychiatry, Physiotherapy, Rehab Assistants, Social Work and Speech Language Pathology. Consulting services are also provided by prosthetists and orthotists.
