Welcome message from site

We have had many students come to Evergreen House, not really wanting to work with or feeling comfortable being with the elderly but have finished their placements feeling they have gained an understanding of many skills and behaviours that they can use in all areas of physiotherapy practice.

Our population is getting older; you will meet seniors in every aspect of your practice. Evergreen House provides an ideal environment for you to learn from our residents and care team, about complex medical conditions, medications, communication and working with their families as they come to terms with end-of-life decisions.

Community Health

Facility Type:

Long-Term Care/Residential

Patient population description:

Evergreen House is a 287 complex care/residential care facility located on the same site as Lions Gate Hospital.

The 'house' has three levels; EGH1 & EGH2 have over 100 residents each and EGH3 has approximately 50 'complex complex' care residents. All of our residents require 24-hour care and we anticipate they will remain here as if it were their home. Although the population is predominantly the elderly (our oldest resident is 103 years old); we do have some younger residents who, due to complex health care needs, can no longer remain in their own home. Occasionally residents do show improvement in their functional status and, with the teams' help, are able to move back into the community.

Physiotherapist expertise on site (special interests, degrees, certificates, etc.):

We have two full-time physiotherapists and one part-time physiotherapist as well as five rehabilitation assisants for the house. Our staff have a passion for working and caring for the elderly. They understand their complex health care needs and the importance of maintaining residents' function whenever possible. Many have chosen to study & work with the elderly for many years. They have taken post graduation course in falls management, dementia, communication, balance disorders and the complex health issues of the elderly. They are also continuing to learn about the 'Eden Philosophy' of care of the elderly and how to operationalise this at Evergreen House.

These types of learning opportunities may be available at this site:

You will begin to understand the importance of working with the elderly and their team of caregivers with respect, collaboration and understanding.

- How physiotherapists can enhance the well being of seniors with active daily exercise programs and functional activities.

- How your communication to all members of the team and family members is essential for any carryover of theraputic interventions.

- How to assess an elderly person and how to synthesise complex information to develop appropriate plans of care for the residents.

Possible Interprofessional opportunities at this site:

You will be working alongside OT, RA, recreation therapy, RNs, LPNs & care aides, as well as social workers, SLP and pastoral care. You will participate in many interdisciplinary meetings related to resident care.
