Clinical Faculty

Clinical Faculty play an important role in the Department of Physical Therapy and the Faculty of Medicine. Through their contributions to the educational and research programs of the department, faculty and University communities, and through their leadership within their respective organizations, they advance the profession of physiotherapy and serve as role models and mentors for physiotherapy students.

The Faculty of Medicine’s Clinical Faculty website is the main source of information for Clinical Faculty.

Applications are reviewed by the department Head and/or the Clinical Appointment, Reappointment, and Promotion committee each year in March and should be submitted prior to the below stated deadline to be reviewed at the upcoming committee meeting:

2026 applications for appointment, reappointment, and promotion will be reviewed at the departmental committee meeting in mid-March 2026. The deadline to apply and submit all supporting documents is: Friday February 13th, 2026

Eligibility

Eligibility for Clinical Faculty is governed by the UBC Faculty of Medicine Policy on Clinical Faculty Appointments (2025). Useful resources that outline eligibility requirements at the various ranks include the above policy, Appendix A in particular, and:

Typically, contributions to the Department of Physical Therapy may include:

  • Supervision of students on clinical placement
  • Teaching activities in the Master of Physical Therapy program (e.g., teaching assistant, module instructor/facilitator, guest lecturer, clinical skills assistant)
  • Serving on a committee(s)
  • Facilitation of interprofessional curriculum
  • Serving on professional bodies that support MPT education and the profession

Prepare Your Application for Appointment

All new appointments will be at the rank of Clinical Instructor unless the eligibility requirements for a higher rank are met. Please see "Eligibility" information provided above for more information about eligibility requirements.

Application for Clinical Faculty Reappointment or Promotion

Existing clinical faculty members who need to apply for reappointment at the end of their term, or who wish to apply for a promotion in rank are required to submit all noted items in accordance with requirements set out in:

  • The Reappointment and Promotions page
  • Appendix A of the Policy

Please ensure that you carefully outline and provided any documentary evidence for:

  • How you have met the academic contributions of 50 hours over a two-year period
  • Specific examples of teaching/educational leadership, service, and/or scholarly activity

Applications which require committee review in accordance with the FoM Policy are processed once annually, in the spring. Applications which do not require committee review in accordance with the FoM Policy are processed twice annually, in the spring and fall.

Notifications will be sent as soon as results are processed, which may take up to two months.
