Clinical Skills Assistants:

Clinical Skills Assistants (CSAs) help with practical instruction in lab sessions. The role of the CSA is to help support the lead instructor in demonstrating and teaching skills that require close supervision of students. The lead instructor will demonstrate a skill/technique from one location/site then a CSA will facilitate and support students as they practice those skills at their site. Typically, CSAs need to be registered physiotherapists with some experience in the specific area being taught.

Testimonials

The students were the highlight for sure. Getting to know 20 up-and-coming physiotherapists during such an important part of their learning process was very energizing and rewarding. Great people!

I really enjoyed the experience. Having recently graduated it was nice to support people who I knew were going through a tough program and reassure them.

Seeing the students’ eagerness to learn, and being able to assist them as much as I could was a great experience for me.

I have had the privilege of serving as a clinical instructor for the UBC MPT program, and I can’t express how beneficial this experience has been, both as an instructor and in my clinical practice. For me, the best part of being a clinical instructor is witnessing the transformation of aspiring physical therapists into skilled professionals. It’s been a pleasure to play a role in their journey.”

I am very happy that I decided to apply for and work in this position. It is a very rewarding experience as I learn to understand where students are in their learning, and I can come alongside them. I found it extremely helpful to have access to the lectures of the course, as it gave me a better understanding of what the students have already learned and what they have to focus on when I help in the classroom.

Lecture Assistants:

With academic distribution, there is a need for a ‘facilitator’ in the cohort where the lecture is distributed. They help the lead instructor to maintain “teacher presence” in the classroom of distributed sites. This role does not require knowledge of the content being taught and is more of a local class leader position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the class runs smoothly
  • Contacting MedIT if any audio-visual issues arise
  • Supervision of students (eg ensuring students are being professional, participating in any discussions, and arriving promptly for class)

Lecturer Assistants report primarily to the Academic Site Lead and will receive some orientation to carry out their duties. This role is suitable for Registered Physiotherapists, Physiotherapy Assistants, Graduate Students (MSc/PhD) and others.
