What inspired you to pursue the Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) degree at UBC?
My journey into the healthcare field has been driven by a deep passion for helping others feel better—whether by supporting recovery from injuries and conditions or assisting individuals in maintaining their health in the face of chronic illness. My grandparents raised me with the belief that helping others is both a privilege and a responsibility, I’ve always felt a strong calling to serve my community. From the beginning, I have been motivated by a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. While I may not be able to change the world on a grand scale, I know that through my work, I can significantly improve the lives of those I encounter in the clinic or hospital. The medical field, where my strengths truly lie, is the perfect platform for me to fulfill my passion for service.
One of the aspects of physiotherapy that excites me most is the opportunity to give back through pro bono work. I firmly believe that healthcare should be accessible to everyone, and I feel it is my responsibility to leverage the privilege of my education to serve those who may otherwise face barriers to care. For me, pursuing a career in physiotherapy is not just about treating physical ailments; it’s about making healthcare more inclusive and compassionate and empowering others to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Now, having earned my Master’s in Physical Therapy, I am more committed than ever to this mission.
How was your experience in the MPT program?
My experience at UBC’s MPT program has been nothing short of transformative. Throughout the course of my studies, I was fortunate to receive exceptional support from faculty and peers, which played a significant role in shaping my growth both academically and professionally. The program provided a robust foundation in physical therapy, offering hands-on learning experiences that allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world clinical settings.
One of the highlights of the MPT program was the opportunity to explore a wide range of specialties within physiotherapy. From musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation to pediatrics and geriatrics, the program’s comprehensive curriculum equipped me with the diverse skill set needed to treat a variety of conditions and meet the needs of different patient populations. Each rotation and specialized course deepened my understanding of the profession and reinforced my passion for providing holistic, patient-centered care.
The collaborative environment fostered a strong sense of community, where I felt encouraged to ask questions, share insights, and learn from my fellow students and faculty members. Whether it was through small group discussions, practical exams, or clinical placements, I was constantly challenged to think critically, problem-solve, and refine my clinical reasoning.
In addition to academic and clinical growth, the program also offered valuable resources for personal development. I appreciated the mentorship from experienced physiotherapists, the opportunities for networking, and the overall commitment to fostering a sense of professionalism and ethical practice. Looking back, I can confidently say that the MPT program not only prepared me to be a skilled physiotherapist but also instilled in me the values of empathy, service, and lifelong learning that will guide me throughout my career.
What do you want to tell new physical therapy students about what they can expect during the program?
To all the new physical therapy students out there—buckle up and enjoy the ride! The MPT program is an exciting, challenging, and incredibly rewarding journey. You’ll be pushed to your limits, but trust me, you’ll rise to the challenge. There will be long days, intense studying, and maybe even a few moments when you wonder if you’ve bitten off more than you can chew—but take it day by day. Keep breathing, stay present, and remember that you’re capable of more than you think. You’ll learn so much—not just about the body, but about yourself. And while it might feel overwhelming at times, trust me when I say: you’re going to be great. Stay curious, keep an open mind, and most importantly—enjoy life as Dr. Seuss wisely said, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… get on your way!”
Seriously, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle, but take a moment to enjoy the journey. Take in the little wins, laugh at the funny moments (because they’ll come!), and don’t forget to live in the moment; as yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that’s why it’s called ‘the present’! So enjoy the present, you’ve got this!
How did you enjoy the community(s) you visited while on placement?
During my placements, I had the privilege of working with diverse communities, each offering unique experiences. I met patients from various cultural backgrounds, which enriched my understanding of how different lifestyles and values shape health and recovery. It was a great reminder that physiotherapy is not just about treating the body, but also about understanding the whole person. I also had the chance to enjoy the natural beauty of different areas—whether it was hiking, exploring parks, or simply appreciating the fresh air. These experiences not only helped me recharge but reinforced the importance of physical and mental well-being in overall health. Overall, the diversity I encountered during my placements was incredibly rewarding. It deepened my passion for physiotherapy and reminded me of the importance of human connection in healing.
Where are you hoping the MPT program takes you? What’s next?
The MPT program has provided me with the foundation for the future I envision—one where I can make a meaningful difference in healthcare by working across both the private and public sectors. Ultimately, I aspire to grow into a clinic lead role, where I can inspire and mentor other physiotherapists and healthcare professionals, fostering an environment of collaboration, continuous learning, and patient-centred care. Beyond clinical practice, I am deeply committed to addressing the accessibility gap in healthcare. I plan to set up and run free physio camps, providing essential physiotherapy services to those who may not have access to care due to financial, geographic, or other barriers. My vision is to eventually expand these camps to serve underserved communities, helping to bridge the gap in healthcare access and giving back to those who need it most.
In addition to serving patients, I want to mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals, whether they pursue physiotherapy or other paths within the medical field. I hope to be a role model who leads by example—emphasizing empathy, integrity, and the importance of serving with compassion.
Ultimately, my goal is to not only excel in my practice but also to contribute to a healthcare system that prioritizes accessibility, mentorship, and the well-being of all patients, regardless of their circumstances. I want to leave a legacy of service, kindness, and humility—values that are central to my identity as a Sikh. By embodying the principles of selfless service (seva) and compassion in my work, I hope to make a lasting impact on both my patients and the communities I serve
