Karen Tugwell – National Physiotherapy Month

Name and Title(s):

Karen Tugwell

Research, Education and Practice Coordinator for Physiotherapy

Where do you work?

Providence Health Care (North Vancouver, BC)

Working in a collaborative, supportive environment where Physiotherapists learn from, and mentor other Physiotherapists.

Physiotherapists are in a position to provide both a comprehensive assessment and treatment while also having the time to help patients better understand their condition. In this role we can encourage patients to advocate for themselves as well as self-manage their condition.

Physiotherapists play a key role empowering individuals with knowledge about their condition and supporting patients to take an active role in their rehabilitation.

Many people don’t realize the value that Physiotherapists offer with regards to providing patient education about both the immediate condition being treated, and the importance of prevention strategies to minimize possible future issues.

I was always interested in the functioning of the human body. I also like that as a physiotherapist you have the flexibility to work in a number of different settings and areas of practice, with a variety of different individuals presenting with different conditions. I like that each workday is different from another.

In my role with Providence Health Care, I am able to work with and learn from Physiotherapists across the continuum of their careers working in acute, rehabilitation and long-term care settings allowing me to stay connected in multiple areas of practice.

I have an identical twin sister and I lived and worked as a Physiotherapist in Australia for 12 years.
