Trainees win American College of Sports Medicine Award

Trainees supervised by Kristin Campbell are winners of the American College of Sports Medicine Karen Hornbostel Award for the best trainee-led abstract on cancer at the Annual MeetingĀ  currently on in Orlando Florida for their systematic review:

Physical Function in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review and Comparison to Healthy Normative Data, Stanley Hung, Sarah Neil, Amy Kirkham, Negin Niksirat, Kristin Campbell.

Breast cancer treatment is known to have negative side effects on physical function. Although declines in function have been documented, and interventions to improve function exist, the literature lacks data on expected baseline values in women before, during or after breast cancer treatment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review was to summarize reported baseline values of physical function, and to compare them to published normative values for healthy women.

CONCLUSION: Although functional capacity in breast cancer survivors as measured by 6 minute walk distance appears to be similar to published norms in healthy women, aerobic capacity as measured by VO2peak, and grip strength appear to be lower.
