Fun at the Physio Forum

The Physiotherapy Forum was again a great success with a large attendance of over 450.  The Department participated on many fronts with presentations from faculty, alumni and trainees.  UBC PT Alumni Rick Celebrini’s talk “Recreational and Elite Athletes; Can we really prevent injuries?” was very well attended  and Clinical faculty Libby Swain’s talk “physiotherapy for people with a nervous system” also generated a lot of enthusiastic discussion.  Jayne Garland, Dept. Head, gave an overview of how the Department has grown and matured and hit new heights of excellence in recent years. Knowledge Broker, Alison Hoens and members of her project teams provided a great summary of their activities.  The handout with this summary of projects is available on our site under the KB pages.  In the UBC lounge we received excellent feedback on our community engagement survey and enjoyed connecting with people at our clinical education table, human book library and alumni table.  If you were not able to attend in person and take our survey, it is available at http://fluidsurveys.com/s/UBC-PT-Community-Engagement-Survey-2012/, also if you are an alumnus and want to sign up for an A card you can do that on the Alumni Affairs website.

Congratulations to research poster winners Judit Takacs for her poster Validity and reliability of the Community Balance and Mobility Scale in knee osteoarthritis and Lyndal Solomons for her poster Intramuscular stimulation and eccentric exercise vs eccentric exercise plus sham needling or eccentric exercise alone for the treatment of chronic midportion Achilles tendinopathy: A randomized controlled clinical trial pilot study.

Next year we hope to have posters in the categories of case studies and programs in addition to the academic research category so look for those interesting cases and look forward to a chance to toot your horn if you have implemented a creative health programs.
