Sue Murphy is a passionate educator who has worked tirelessly for our Department for over seventeen years in a number of teaching and educational roles.Sue joined the Department of Physical Therapy in 1994 after supporting our teaching endeavors through her prior role as Clinical Coordinator for physiotherapy students at Royal Columbian Hospital, where she planned and coordinated student placements and mentored clinical supervisors. In 2002, Sue held the position of Interim Head of the Division of Physical Therapy for four years; in this role she maintained a large teaching component and was instrumental in the transition from a Bachelor program to a Master of Physical Therapy (MPT). In her current role as Associate Head of Clinical Education, she continues to carry a major teaching load within the program and contributes significantly to curriculum development in her role as Professional Stream Coordinator. In recognition of her tremendous contributions and devotion to teaching excellence, she was promoted to Senior Instructor in 2009.
Sue serves as an inspiration to her students through her commitment and dedication to her profession. She has contributed for over 15 years to Physical Therapy professional organizations: the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia (PABC). She has served as a committee member PABC/UBC Student Mentorship Program and the PABC Education Committee. PABC has honored Sue with their highest awards in both leadership and education categories. She also influences students’ acquisition of knowledge by serving as a member of the Student Bursary application committee and the National Association of Clinical Educators in Physiotherapy and as Chair of the CPA Awards committee. Thus, her influence on Physical Therapy clinical education extends throughout Canada.
With consideration of Sue’s extensive, effective and scholarly approach to teaching, her vast contributions to Physical Therapy course development, curriculum and clinical education, and her ability to inspire students to embrace lifelong learning and professional commitment, we are proud to have Sue Murphy
