There is an ongoing debate surrounding mirror neuron systems. The debate is between whether mirror neurons, associated with human cognitive development, evolve through individual experience or are innately inherited. Dr. Naznin Virji-Babul is a recognized expert in the mirror neuron system and her work was quoted in Cosmos, Austrailia’s #1 science media brand. Work from her recent publication in Brain and Behavior offered evidence that it is likely a situation where both nature and nurture come into play. Her results “suggest that infants may have a basic, experience-independent sensorimotor mechanism optimized to detect all coherentmotion that is modulated by experience.”
