“Early Bird” pricing for the course (prior to April 1, 2015) is $500 (if you’ve supervised, or will supervise, a student for a minimum of 70 hour clinical practicum between September 2013-September 2015) and $575 (regular rate, without contribution to student supervision). This inter-disciplinary, continuing education course is the ultimate learning experience for all clinicians interested in neuroscience and rehabilitation.
Day 1: Will be spent in in the neuroanatomy lab reviewing the brain and spinal cord through interactive “hands-on” learning with cadaver specimens and supported by dynamic on-line modules/videos and inter-disciplinary case studies.
Day 2: Will focus on the application of neuroanatomy to the clinician’s daily practice. Topics to be covered include:
• An overview of neuroimaging (CT and MRI)
• An introduction to devices that are currently being used to assess/influence brain activity and their applicability to rehabilitation
• An overview of how neuroanatomy knowledge pertains to disease/injury prognosis, assessment and treatment planning, and differential diagnosis.
*This course is open to all rehabilitation clinicians (i.e.: physical therapists, occupational therapists, physicians, nurses, speech-language pathologists, rehabilitation assistants, psychologists).
Claudia Krebs, MD, PhD is a Senior Instructor in the Faculty of Medicine with extensive experience in teaching anatomy and neuroanatomy to health professions students. Dr. Krebs has pioneered new teaching methods by implementing a flipped classroom for which she and her team developed an extensive online repository of media to help learn neuroanatomy. She has published a textbook on neuroscience and has received several awards for her accomplishments in education.
Lara Boyd, PT, PhD is the Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology of Motor Learning, a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Career Investigator, a Peter Wall Scholar, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, at the University of British Columbia. She is a Neuroscientist and Physical Therapist. Dr. Boyd directs the Brain Behaviour Lab at the University of British Columbia, which performs research designed to advance theoretical conceptualizations of how brain function relates to behaviour during learning. She is an expert in neuroimaging and neurophysiology, and uses a variety of cutting edge technology in her research.
Tara Klassen, PT, MSc is an Instructor in the UBC Department of Physical Therapy and oversees and teaches in the neurological curriculum in the UBC Masters of Physical Therapy Program. She is also currently pursuing her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences, investigating exercise intensity in the early phase after stroke, with Dr. Janice Eng at GF Strong Rehabilitation Center. Tara has been practicing and teaching neurological physical therapy for over 15 years in Canada and the United States, and has worked on a number of multi-site national rehabilitation clinical trials investigating functional recovery in individuals after stroke.
