The Northern and Rural Cohort (NRC) of the UBC MPT program is a provincially funded initiative developed in partnership with the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) which aims to increase recruitment and retention of physiotherapists to northern and rural areas where there is a significant shortage of PTs.
It is designed for applicants who are from, or who would like to work in, northern or rural areas. 20 of the 80 seats in the MPT program are allocated to the NRC and during their studies, students are expected to complete four out of their six clinical placements in northern and rural communities. Our NRC cohort is part of our class of 80 students and receive their training at UBC. It is only when they go out on their clinical placements that they will spend the bulk of the time in northern and rural communities. Following level 1 placements, NRC students complete a short academic block (stationed around their rural placements) at the UNBC in Prince George using distributed education technology.
With UNBC as the clinical education hub of the NRC, northern and rural placements sites are supported through local preceptor training, increased student support, and the development of innovative clinical education models designed to increase the number of student placements, and in turn enhance rehabilitation services in northern and rural areas.
Clinical learning for students takes place anywhere within the Northern Health Authority, or at other sites designated as rural across the province. Rural sites are typically small towns at considerable distance from urban centres. The actual location of clinical learning sites will vary each year depending on clinical educator availability and other factors. Students will experience a wide variety of clinical settings in both public and private sectors with potential to participate in innovative projects and novel clinical experiences.
If you are interested in applying to be a part of the NRC please ensure that you have indicated your interest on your application. You are required complete and submit a supplementary application which must be submitted by the January 15 2019 document submission deadline application deadline.
