With externally administered awards, the chair of the Department Awards Committee informs donors and recipients of the committee’s decision and ensures a mechanism by which funds are distributed.

Heather Howard Memorial Scholarship

Eligible: MPT1
A scholarship of $1000, value varies, endowed in memory of Heather Howard (B.S.R., UBC, 1970), is open to a student who has completed the first year of the Master in Physical Therapy Program. It is awarded on the recommendation of Department of Physical Therapy to a student who is deserving of assistance, has demonstrated good academic ability and a keen interest in Rehabilitation Sciences, and who has participated meaningfully in student activities.
Margaret Croucher Memorial Award

An award of $400, value varies, has been endowed by friends, family and colleagues of Margaret Croucher, to recognize her personal qualities and her pioneering contribution to the field of Rehabilitation in Home Care Services. The award is made at the beginning of the spring term, to a final year student in the Master of Physical Therapy program who has shown a keen interest in all aspects of Rehabilitation Sciences. Preference is given to a mature student deserving of financial assistance. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Physical Therapy.
Applicants will be asked to include a yearly budget outline and other information regarding financial needs.

A $1,600 scholarship, value varies, has been endowed by the Vancouver Branch of The Arthritis Society, B.C. & Yukon Division. The award is offered to a student in the Department of Physical Therapy interested in clinical research in Rheumatology or to a student completing an MSc or PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences who has a physical therapy focus to their research. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Physical Therapy.

The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Physical Therapy to a student who has completed his or her clinical education with distinction and has demonstrated initiative and compassion through volunteer activities in the community.

Stephanie Gnup Scholarship in Physical Therapy

University of B.C. Rehabilitation Sciences Alumni Bursary

Eligible: MPT1, MPT2
Bursaries totalling $6,400 have been made available through an endowment established by the School of Rehabilitation Medicine Undergraduate Society for first and second-year Master of Physical Therapy and Master of Occupational Therapy students and are based on financial need, participation in school and community activities, and academic standing. The recommendation is made by a joint faculty-alumni-student committee in consultation with Enrolment Services from the applications received.

Brigitte Raudzus Memorial Award in Physical Therapy

A $1,000 award, value varies, is offered annually by Dietmar Raudzus in memory of his wife Brigitte Raudzus for physical therapy students with an interest in working with children with developmental or neurologic disorders. Brigitte was an involved UBC alumna (BSc Rehab 1966) and physiotherapist, and was also very active in her community as a volunteer and philanthropist. The award will be made on the recommendation of the Department of Physical Therapy in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Ming Leung Memorial Scholarship in Physical Therapy

Scholarships totalling $4,000 have been made available annually through gifts from friends and family in memory of Ming Leung (1954-2021), for outstanding students in the Master of Physical Therapy program. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in seniors’ health. Ming was born in Malaysia and immigrated with her family at the age of 12 to Vancouver. Ming graduated from UBC with a Bachelor in Rehabilitation Sciences in 1976 and obtained a Master of Science in 2012 from Simon Fraser University. Through her career in physiotherapy, Ming developed an interest in seniors’ health, which led her to be involved with the initiation of falls and injury prevention projects within Fraser Health Authority. In addition, she contributed her expertise to long-term care facilities across the Lower Mainland by implementing new practices supporting exercise and falls prevention for residents. Ming was passionate about her work, mentoring many students and helping them with career placements in this field. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Department of Physical Therapy, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Canadian Federation of University Women West Vancouver – Madge Wiesman Memorial Award

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) West Vancouver is a member of CFUW, a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization with close to 100 CFUW Clubs located in every province across Canada. Since its founding in 1919, CFUW has been working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace.
A one-time award of $2000 has been provided by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) – West Vancouver to honour the memory of Madge Wiesman. Madge was a proud physical therapist all her working life and was actively involved with the College of Physical Therapists of BC. This generous award is intended for a female student in the Master of Physical Therapy program who has completed at least one full year of the MPT program and has demonstrated academic excellence as well as community volunteering. Financial needs may also be taken into consideration. The applications will be reviewed by the UBC MPT Awards Committee. The committee will select their top 3 applicants and those application packages will then be sent to the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) – West Vancouver to review where the final recipient will be determined. In addition to an application form, applicants must also provide a letter of reference to confirm their volunteer experience.
Stephen Howard Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship in the amount of $700, value varies, is offered to a first year student in the Master of Physical Therapy Program for general proficiency in that field. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Physical Therapy.
Ken Fraser Memorial Scholarships

Two scholarships of $850 each, value varies, have been endowed by friends and colleagues of the late Ken F. Fraser. Mr. Fraser, who died in December, 1977, was a founding Director of the G. F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre, and served as President of the Centre as well as Chairman of the Building Committee for the Centre for 5 building projects spanning the period 1948 to 1976. His efforts contributed substantially to the operation one of the largest and most modern rehabilitation facilities in Canada. One scholarship is made to a second year student in the Master of Occupational Therapy program. One scholarship is made to a second year student in the Master of Physical Therapy program. The scholarships are based on academic standing in the first year MOT and MPT courses. The awards are made on the recommendation of the respective Departments.
