Admission Requirements

The following admission requirements are for INTERNATIONAL applicants only. For the purposes of admission, an international applicant is someone who is NOT a Canadian citizen and who does not have landed immigrant status or refugee status at the time of application. Applicants for the Master of Physical Therapy program must meet the admissions requirements outlined by the Faculty of Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies and the Department of Physical Therapy in order to be eligible for admission to the program. The Master of Physical Therapy admissions process consists of two parts: the application and an interview. Applicants must first meet the minimum admission requirements in order to be eligible for interview consideration. Once eligible applications are evaluated, qualified applicants will be invited to an interview. Final admission decisions are made based on both the overall application and the interview. Annual enrollment for the Master of Physical Therapy program is limited to a maximum of 8 seats for international students in addition to the 80 seats allocated for domestic students.

In order to be eligible for admission, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Completion of a recognized 4 year Bachelor’s Degree (120 units/credits) or its equivalent in any field
  2. Completion of a minimum of 70 hours of Volunteer and/or Paid Work Experience at no more than 2 facilities
  3. Achieve the Minimum Academic Requirements as set out by the Faculty of Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies.
  4. Successful completion of the Prerequisite Requirements including Physics, English, Anatomy, Psychology, Statistics and Human Physiology. Applicants are required to achieve a minimum of a B (72%) or equivalent in each prerequisite course. In order to be considered for admission to the MPT program, applicants must have completed their prerequisites by the end of December before the application deadline.

Please note that international applicants are not eligible for consideration for entrance into the Northern Rural Cohort.

Admission Requirements

The CASPer Test - Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics 

All applicants to the Master of Physical Therapy, at University of British Columbia are required to complete an online assessment (CASPer), to assist with our selection process. Successful completion of CASPer is mandatory in order to maintain admission eligibility.

CASPer is an online test which assesses for non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that we believe are important for successful students and graduates of our program, and will complement the other tools that we use for applicant screening. In implementing CASPer, we are trying to further enhance fairness and objectivity in our selection process.

In order to take CASPer, you will be responsible for securing access to a computer with audio capabilities, a webcam, and a reliable internet connection on your selected test date. CASPer can be taken practically anywhere that you can satisfy the aforementioned requirements. No exceptions will be provided for applicants unable to take CASPer online due to being located at sites where internet is not dependable due to technical or political factors.

Please go to to sign up and reserve a test using your student id number and a piece of government-issued photo ID. You will be provided with a limited number of testing dates and times. Please note that these are the only testing dates available for your CASPer test. There will be no additional tests scheduled. Please use an email address that you check regularly; there may be updates to the test schedule.

The CASPer test is comprised of 12 sections of video and written scenarios. Following each scenario, you will be required to answer a set of probing questions under a time contract. Each response is graded by a different rater, giving a very robust and reliable view of personal and professional characteristics important to our program. No studying is required for CASPer, although you may want to familiarize yourself with the test structure at, and ensure you have a quiet environment to take the test.

CASPer test results are valid for one admissions cycle. Applicants who have already taken the test in previous years will therefore be expected to re-take it.

Applicants must have completed a recognized 4 year Bachelor's degree (120 units/credits) or its equivalent from an approved institution in any field (please refer to the Faculty of Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies website for equivalencies). Applicants who are currently completing an undergraduate degree and are expecting to graduate in May 2016 are eligible for admission provided that they submit their final official transcript confirming conferral of their degree before they begin the program.

The Masters of Physical Therapy program considers students from a variety of backgrounds. No preference is given to any particular field of Bachelor's degree.

Applicants are required to have completed a MINIMUM of 70 hours of volunteer or paid work experience which includes direct contact involving interaction with persons with cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities at no more than two facilities. These hours must be completed by the application deadline. Work as a receptionist or clerical experience does not meet this requirement.

Applicants must satisfy the minimum academic requirements outlined by the Faculty of Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies on a country-by-country basis. In addition, applicants must achieve a minimum grade of B (72%) or equivalent in each prerequisite course.

Applicants are required to have completed the prerequisite courses listed below and have achieved a minimum grade of B (72%) or equivalent in each course. In order to be considered for admission, applicants must complete their prerequisite courses by December 31 immediately prior to the application deadline. Final official transcripts that include all completed prerequisite courses must be submitted by the application deadline. Applications will not be considered if final grades for prerequisite courses are not submitted before the deadline.

A minimum grade of B (72%) or equivalent is required in each prerequisite course. Applicants are required to have completed all of the following prerequisites:

  • Human Physiology - 6 credits in Human Physiology. A two term/full-year 6 credits course in Human Physiology or two 3 credit courses, one in Basic Physiology and one in Advanced Physiology.
    • Topics covered in prerequisite:  Courses that are categorized as basic physiology courses are introductory courses solely based on human physiology and contain the following topics: properties of the living cell; neural, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine systems; metabolism, reproduction and homeostasis. Courses that are categorized as advanced physiology courses are higher level physiology courses that cover topics in more detail, for example any course in exercise physiology.
  • Anatomy - 3 credits (or 1 term/half-year) in Human Anatomy.
    • Topics covered in prerequisite: Anatomy courses must cover gross anatomy of the human musculoskeletal, visceral and neurological systems
  • Physics - Physics 12 or equivalent secondary level Physics course (including online Grade 12 physics) OR 3 credits of ANY university level Physics.
    • Notes and Exceptions: We do not require that the course you complete has a lab component. Bio-mechanics is NOT accepted to cover this prerequisite. AP or IB credits can be used to cover this prerequisite - please see below for minimum requirements. For application to the  MPT program starting in 2020 (application to open in September 2019), Physics 12 will no longer be acceptable. Applicants must take the equivalent to UBC PHYS 101 (or higher) in order to meet the prerequisite requirement. A final mark of 72% (B) or higher is required."
  • English - 3 credits (or 1 term/half-year) in 1st year university level English OR the minimum required standard in an approved English Proficiency Examination (see 'English Prerequisite Requirement' section below for more information). AP or IB credits can also be used to cover this prerequisite - please see below for minimum requirements.
  • Psychology - 3 credits (or 1 term/half-year) in Psychology. Any course offered by the Department of Psychology at your institution will satisfy this requirement. AP or IB credits can be used to cover this prerequisite - please see below for minimum requirements.
  • Statistics - 3 credits (or 1 term/half-year) in Statistics.
    • Topics covered in prerequisite: Content should include statistical methods, probability theory, discrete and continuous random variables, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression, analysis or variance, goodness of fit, confidence intervals, elementary non-parametric methods, exploratory data analysis and hypothesis testing, simple linear regression and contingency tables variances. AP or IB credits can be used to cover this prerequisite - please see below for minimum requirements.

Applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree in a country where English is the primary language of instruction are required to have completed a 1st year university level English course and achieved a minimum grade of B (72%) or equivalent. The equivalent of 3 credits (or 1 term/half-year) of 1st year university level English is required and the course must have an assessment of reading, writing and essay composition. Courses in Humanities and/or Social Science will not be accepted.

Applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree in a country where English is NOT the primary language of instruction are not required to have completed a 1st year university level English course but are required to meet the minimum standard in an approved English Language Proficiency Examination. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application. Acceptable English language proficiency tests for applicants to the Masters of Physical Therapy program are:

Prerequisite Course Review Requests must be received by November 1 before the application deadline. Final approval of prerequisite courses rests with the admissions office in the Department of Physical Therapy and may only be available after your application has been submitted and evaluated.

If the Institution's primary language of instruction is English, please submit a Prerequisite Course Review Request using the Request Form. Do not email your request. Applicants are responsible for obtaining the necessary course outlines. Please note that the course outline must include an outline of the course content, a course schedule that shows the topics reviewed each week, the grade distribution and the format of the course.

If the Institution's primary language of instruction is in a language other than English or if the course outline requires translation into English, please submit a Prerequisite Course Review Request using the Request Form and include a certified English translation of the course outline. Please note that the course outline must include an outline of the course content, a course schedule that shows the topics reviewed each week, the grade distribution and the format of the course. Applicants who have completed approved AP exams and/or IB credits, and who have achieved the minimum scores listed in the chart below, may use these credits to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for English, Physics, Psychology and Statistics.

Applicants who intend to use AP or IB credits to meet prerequisite requirements must upload official AP or IB transcripts onto their application by the application deadline.

Interviews and Offers of Admission

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will have their application evaluated for interview consideration. The University of British Columbia’s Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program is highly competitive and only qualified applicants will be invited for an interview. Fulfillment of the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview. Selection of interview candidates is based on a review of an applicant's overall application for admission.

Interviews for the MPT program use the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. The purpose of the MMI is to ascertain an applicant’s verbal communication skills, maturity level and personal suitability to the program and profession. Interviews take place, in person, at the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Currently, there are no alternatives to the in person, MMI interview process.

Interviews for the September 2018 program intake will be held on March 9, 2018.

Following the interview, the department may offer a position within the program to a maximum of 8 of the top ranked international applicants. 

Program Requirements for Admitted Students

Under the Criminal Records Review Act, students registered in a university or college with a placement/practicum component that involves working with children and/or vulnerable adults directly or that have potentially unsupervised access to children and/or vulnerable adults must provide a criminal record check authorization. Successful applicants to the program must provide a signed criminal record check authorization at the start of the program. If you are found to present a risk of physical or sexual abuse to children or vulnerable adults, as a result of the criminal record check, you will be unable to register in the MPT program clinical placements and subsequently you may not graduate from the program. Please consider this requirement carefully before applying to this program. Please do not submit a criminal record check with your application.

MPT students must successfully complete six clinical placements as part of their MPT training. The ability for a student to complete their clinical placements is contingent on the applicant being granted a student registration with the College of Physical Therapists of BC. The registration procedure includes a criminal-record check, which will be processed by the College during the first week of classes for MPT students. Anyone considering a career in physical therapy who has been convicted of a criminal offence – even if given an absolute discharge – should write to the Registrar of the College prior to completing an application to the College or applying to the MPT program. By discussing this with the College, applicants will best be able to assess their ability to obtain a student registration. The UBC Department of Physical Therapy and the College consider professional and ethical behaviour to be critical elements in the study and practice of Physical Therapy. As such, the College, through its registration procedure, also asks applicants to disclose any issues of previous conduct, personal behaviour, or competence that may impede the granting of the physical therapy student’s license. Applicants are encouraged to discuss such matters directly and in confidence with the College.
