Background
The “Outreach Therapy Services in Indigenous Rural and Remote Communities of BC Initiative” was catalyzed by a call for Physical Therapy Knowledge Broker projects. The application from the BC Centre for Ability was selected. Although the initial submission requested a scoping review of the literature exploring how to provide outreach services for pediatric and adult clients in rural and remote communities it was subsequently focused on Indigenous rural and remote communities.
This initiative is founded on the recognition that systemic inequities have resulted in significant barriers to accessing health services in Indigenous rural and remote communities, further contributing to health disparities brought on by colonial oppression.
This initiative is not a research project and is unfunded.
Purpose
The purposes of the initiative are:
- To identify and understand the current outreach therapy services in Indigenous rural and remote communities throughout BC
- To identify opportunities to coordinate services
- To recommend what additional services are needed/desired and share these with healthcare service decision-makers
One of the first steps of the initiative was to undertake a scoping review to gain an appreciation of the literature relevant to outreach health services in rural and remote Indigenous communities in BC.
The scoping review included literature exploring the provision of outreach health services in BC and beyond.
Findings of the scoping review
The literature does not identify or recommend which services are needed and desired, but instead guides how to provide the services – specifically, requiring intentionality and grounding in partnership, community, holistic care, relationships, cultural competence, and recognition of the unique and individual needs of each person and community.
The findings offer insights into how to approach the initiative underway to understand and address the needs of rural and remote Indigenous communities for outreach therapy services.
The next steps of the initiative are to identify the currently available outreach therapy services and work with communities to identify potential opportunities to better coordinate these services and to recommend priorities in supporting the provision of additional services.
