We are saddened to learn of the passing of Brigitte Raudzus (UBC BSc Rehab 1966) on September 2. Born in Munich, Germany, Brigitte immigrated to Canada with her family in 1958. She graduated from Delbrook High School in North Vancouver and she went on to fulfil her dream of becoming a physiotherapist when she completed her degree here at UBC. Over the course of her career, she practiced at the Lion’s Gate Hospital, with Canadian Forces Europe, the National Hospital in Ottawa and in North Shore Health Service, where she worked mainly with paediatric patients with neurological and developmental challenges. She retired from her work in 2003.
Brigitte was an active member of Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief where she and her family funded water source, food security and forestry initiatives in Uganda. She also supported hospitals, churches, the Red Cross, Plan Canada and her favourite, the Salvation Army. Brigitte was a keen sportswoman who kayaked ocean passages, skied expertly at Whistler for decades, played tennis and enjoyed long-distance cycling trips with her many friends. She was a true leader and a very capable business woman as well. She was loved and respected by all who knew her and the many who admired her for her keen mind and her many accomplishments. She will be remembered by her classmates from UBC, her colleagues and the many patients who were fortunate to experience her skill and devotion.
The Brigitte Raudzus Memorial Award in Physical Therapy has been established by her husband, Dr. Dietmar Raudzus, to honour her life and work. In keeping with Brigitte’s lifelong commitment working with children with developmental and neurologic disorders, this new award will be given to physical therapy students who have an interest in this area.
