The Department celebrates success in trainee awards

Trainees supervised by Department faculty have enjoyed recent success in trainee awards.  Recently the Alberta Innovates Health Solutions announced award winners:

Cameron Mang, currently supervised by Lara Boyd received funding for a study entitled, “Robotic Assessment of Sensorimotor Control Following Sport-related Concussion: Implications for Return-to-play.  He will be supervised by Sean Dukelow at the University of Calgary.

Amy Kirkham, currently supervised by Kristin Campbell, was awarded funding to support her in her work with Richard Thompson at the University of Alberta on a project,”Magnetic Resonance Imaging Quantification of the Toxic Effects of Chemotherapy and Protective Effects of Lifestyle Intervention on Cardiovascular and Skeletal Muscle Function in Breast Cancer”

Department trainees have also been successful in obtaining Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Funding:

Broadie Sakakibara, currently supervised by Janice Eng will be supported during his work on “A telehealth intervention to promote healthy lifestyles after stroke: The Stroke COACH” at Simon Fraser under the supervision of Scott Lear with continued co-supervision by Janice Eng.

Also from Dr. Eng’s lab, Adebimpe Obembe will receive support for “Influence of community rehabilitation services on community reintegration and health utilization  after stroke

Two fellows from Lara Boyd’s lab also obtained support:

Kathryn Hayward for “Characterizing Arm Recovery in People with Severe Stroke (CARPSS)” and

Jason Neva for “Using aerobic exercise to enhance motor learning and cortical excitability after stroke

Cindy Barha will be supervised by Teresa Liu-Ambrose for “A randomized controlled trial examining the effect of aerobic exercise on cognitive decline and brain region volumes in older men and women with mild cognitive impairment: Possible interaction between sex and BDNF polymorphisms”  She was awarded a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research/ Pacific Alzheimer Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship
