Promoting Women in Science

In January Dr. Lara Boyd and PhD trainee, Jen Ferris accompanied UBC President and Vice Chancellor, Santa Ono on a trip to speak with members of parliament and their staff to discuss the importance of funding science. The UBC delegation, which included other UBC researchers and their trainees, also took part in an Alumni event in Ottawa.

A podcast of the presentations given at that event is available at https://soundcloud.com/alumniubc/spotlight-on-ubc-research-in-ottawa.

Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau focuses on a task that tests reflexes, motor control and attention using the KINARM in the Boyd Lab.

Jen Ferris and Lara Boyd must have made quite a good impression during their visit! Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau followed up with a visit to Dr. Boyd’s lab at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health in March.

Mr. Morneau was accompanied on the tour by local MP, Joyce Murray. They were interested in learning about women in science and highlighting the positive impacts of the recent federal budget on research for UBC. Gail Murphy, UBC VP Research & Innovation and Associate Dean for Research, Rob McMaster, also took part in the visit.
